What is neurology?
Neurology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving the nervous system, encompassing the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles and the neuromuscular junction. Conditions classified as ‘neurological’ are numerous and include; loss of limb function, spinal pain, loss of balance, various muscle diseases and seizures.
How does our neurology service work?
Our patients benefit from some of the best and latest technologies when it comes to diagnosing neurological conditions, and our Computed Tomography (CT) scanner provides invaluable diagnostic insight. Other techniques we use to obtain accurate diagnoses include cerebrospinal fluid sampling, blood testing and biopsies.
Once we have a clear understanding of a pet’s ailment, we can draw upon a wide range of treatment interventions, finding that a multimodal approach often yields the best results. Our extensive physiotherapy facilities boast a water treadmill, a hydro tank, laser therapy, electrotherapy and acupuncture, all of which are invaluable to pets with many debilitating neurological illnesses. Unfortunately, not all neurological conditions can be cured, and much of our service adopts a ‘management’ approach to treatment plans rather than a curative one. Even for these patients, there is often so much that our caring, knowledgeable and enthusiastic team can do to improve and sustain a good quality of life for them.
We keep owners informed of progress every step of the way, discussing all treatment options with complete transparency of fees, because we believe that working as a team with owners brings about the best outcomes for pets.
We would love to be able to get your pet back on their feet. We don’t require a referral from your vet for a physio treatment, but we will for any surgical treatments. If you’re not sure, give us a call and we can point you in the right direction.
